“A Better Me” Wellness Program was created to assist African American residents of Travis County, 18 or older who want to make lifestyle changes related to physical activity and eating habits. The primary objective of the program is to develop or enhance behaviors that can reduce risks for developing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes, or to better manage those conditions if they already exist.
A second, but equally important objective is to be a voice that will help the City of Austin identify and remove barriers to healthy living for African Americans in Travis County.
AAAHCT is seeking individuals who would like to participate in “A Better Me”. The program uses a sports team model and thus the positions are referred to by titles typically used in a sports league. The program is designed to have individuals (players) paired with a coach who will help them set their goals, and provide support and accountability along the way. Coaches will share health related community resources with players to assist them in achieving their goals such as local fitness classes, walking trails, health apps and alternative dietary options. Each player/coach pair will have a manager who will monitor their progress and provide assistance throughout the program.
If you are interested in joining the team, please complete the application for the position you are interested in. Applicants are required to have an in-person interview before joining the program. Please note that for the long term sustainability of the program, we encourage players and coaches to come to the program together. Players are encouraged to seek out someone they already know whom they feel would serve as a good coach. If you are interested in being a coach, look for someone you know that you think might benefit from the program. If you do not have a player or coach to bring to the program but are interested, please still apply. We do match up players and coaches as needed.
